"There was a news report about changing what you eat, something about eating more fish, to help slow down memory loss. Which types of fish are best to eat, and how often? What about for people that don't like eating fish?"

Answer: "Eating food containing "omega-3" fatty acids can protect against brain aging memory loss. Omega-3s are considered healthy fats, and can be found in specific types of fish. Research published in the journal Neurology found that people with low omega-3s in their blood had less brain volume and scored lower on memory tests,compared with others with high omega-3s levels. Consider wild salmon, lake trout, and albacore tuna, among others, several times each week. People that do not like eating fish may consider dietary supplements with fish oil (DHA) ."

"I heard about a new drug that can clear away the Alzheimer's plaques in the brain. Is this something we should consider?"

Answer: "The study you heard about was with a drug called bexarotene, which was shown in mice to clear plaques and improve thinking skills. The good news is that this drug is currently FDA-approved for skin cancer treatment, but it will take many years to confirm these results in humans. This is a good sign of progress, but there still more work to be done. For now, there are several FDA-approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease, an FDA-regulated medical food, as well as several vitamins and supplements. The non-drug approaches (like a healthy diet, physical and mental exercise, staying socially active) are equally important for treatment."

"In the news they were talking about music being used to prevent Alzheimer's disease, is that really possible??"

Answer: "Yes! There is a new study that shows music training over the lifetime can delay memory loss, hearing loss and brain aging.  The study was from researchers at Northwestern University, and is the first to show biological evidence for music delaying the aging process.  Listening to music, playing/learning a musical instrument, and  music activity and educational programs that you can use at home should all be a part of the comprehensive Alzheimer's prevention program"
